Full Steam Ahead!

Day 47 - July 10th

Thankfully the new charger had done the business on our motorhome battery overnight and it was back up to full power – or near enough to.

As we had pretty much accomplished all we needed to at the campground, we took a quick walk through the nearby forest and lake area, which was quite stunning, then packed up and headed into Goteburg for a look around.

Swedish pit toilet on our walk through the local forest in Goteburg. The love heart really is a sweet touch and distracts you from the smell inside.

Goteburg (known as Gothemburg in English and Batmans home town), is Sweden’s second largest city and famous for it’s artistic and musical flare. The musician Jose Gonzalez actually originates from this town. I know, I know he sounds more like a Mexican drug lord than a Swedish local, but believe me he does.

The towns main attractions are a giant amusement park in the centre of the city, a range of art museums and local cafes and eateries so there wasn’t too much of interest to us.

We did manage to stop into a bakery to pick up morning tea and found it to be one of the more up market options in town. We took advantage of the sweet buns available for free taste testing (about half the bowl while the attendant turned around) and then lashed out on two massive cream filled & strawberry topped delicacies.

The neatly wrapped Swedish treats that cost and arm and a leg. We made up for the cost by demolishing their 'free tasting' plate while the attendant had her back turned!

As it was raining we decided to continue driving, this time heading east towards Stockholm stopping at one of Europe’s largest lakes – Lake Vanern.

Again with no destination in mind, we identified a town situated on the lake itself called Amal and headed in that direction. Arriving into town about 2pm, we took a quick drive through and then down towards the caravan park, as we had seen a large parking area identified on the map.

It turned out that the large parking area was right next door to the reception of the local caravan park and thought it might be a bit cheeky for us to setup camp just outside while people only 100m away were paying to stay.

This in mind, we turned around and headed back towards town. As we were leaving, Archangel Hawkeye spotted a large group of campers just across the water at what appeared to be a marina.

We quickly headed back through town towards the marina and found a large car park where a whole number of motorhomes had setup for wild camping. Given the amount of people and one guy who had really got himself comfortable with his awning, table, chairs and laptop out, we had no hesitation in stopping there the night.

The rest of the day was spent with a modest ride around town and along the coastline, a few drinks in the van and then an amazing Japanese curry.
