A Bit of Meissen Magic

Day 18 & 19 - 11th & 12th June

The next day was another early start from Enkirch as we looked to get closer and closer to the Polish border.

It was also pouring with rain for the better part of the day, so we decided to spend the better part of the day in the van getting some miles under our belt.

We made a couple of stops for morning tea and lunch and decided to head towards a small town outside of Dresden called Meissen.

Before arriving into Meissen we stocked up on food and then took a scenic drive through small towns in the area in the hope of possibly finding somewhere to wild camp for the evening.

As we were going through smaller country roads, we were diverted because we came across a bridge that was too low for the van to pass under.

We arrived into Meissen around about 8pm and headed towards the river as we’ve found that other wild campers and parking is most abundant in these areas.

Our Wild Camping spot on the Elbe in Meissen and not far from the castle.

In this instance we hit the jackpot finding a large car park right on the banks of the Elbe river. There were a number of other campers already setup there but still room for us to get on the banks of the river and literally 5 metres from the water.

This picture just shows how close we were to the Elbe. Complete with deck chair and fishing rod.
We were all ready for a drink that night after spending the whole day in the van driving and had a great night. Mum in particular had a great time, so much so that she regaled us with a rendition of a new song of hers ‘Let Go’ and the finer points of ‘Springy Deer’ road signs.

Claire and I both woke to some fairly sore heads, while Mum was surprisingly fresh considering her antics from the night before.

We had to instigate a 'Talking Spoon' due to the rowdiness of the audience.
After a slow start, we made it into the town of Meissen and were astonished at just how beautiful it was. The town itself is famous for it’s porcelain, but is a truly picturesque town and often overlooked by tourists as the head to Dresden instead.

In the afternoon we ended up in a beer garden overlooking the town as it was situated just near the Meissen Cathedral at the top of the hill. The plan was to use their free Internet and have a couple of beers in the sunshine while doing so.

The rest of the day was spent relaxing by the river, while Claire went for a run to clear the toxins out while I slept of the rest of the hangover :)

  1. Your trip sounds great guys, you're seeing some lovely places & doing it economically (I'm researching taking Jimmy to South America for his 60th & may have to sell my first born granddaughter.. imminent arrival... to pay for it,wow!) James & Olivia got engaged last night, very exciting, he & Chris head off on the drive to Perth on monday for riggers courses & hopefully some lucrative mines work. Enjoy your travels, love, Susie xx
