Luxembuuuuuuurrrrrrgggggg

Day 16 - 9th June

The day started early again from Falaise as our goal was to make a quick stop and look around Luxembourg and then towards Enkirch in Germany on the mighty Moselle.

We arrived into Luxembourg around 10:30am and parked in a truck/bus stop just outside of town. Much to Linda’s displeasure, we had a little bit of a walk into the centre of town.

Sunny morning in Luxembourg looking out at the castle.
Given that Luxembourg is only about 80km by 50km, we weren’t expecting the city itself to be very big but were pleasantly surprised by the size and hustle and bustle, as it was Saturday morning and market day.

We stopped into a local café to try one of the local delicacies (seasonal fruit tart) and to use their WIFI as it been a couple of days since we had connected to the outside world.

Mum went for a stroll around Luxembourg to find an ATM so she could extract some cash, but some how wasn’t able to find one. Strange considering Luxembourg is renowned for being a centre of finance!

We all met up again and took another walk through the town visiting the Saturday market, took a few photos and then headed back to the van for our drive to Enkirch, which came highly recommended by Mark and Jemima who spent some time there in 2011.

A massive wagonwheel of cheese at the Saturday market.

Before heading over the border of Luxembourg we filled up with diesel as it is extremely cheap and then headed towards Trier, which lies between Enkirch and Luxembourg and had been recommended by a colleague of Luke’s.

We got in to Trier quite hungry and looked for a supermarket to buy some supplies for lunch. Despite driving the full length of Trier we were able to find anything suitable and ended up in the car park of the German equivalent of Bunnings/B&Q.

Amazingly, they sell bread in their hardware stores, so we managed to whip up a few sandwiches and head on our way to Enkirch without actually seeing the center of Trier.

It was a quick drive up the road to Enkirch and we passed through some very beautiful German towns on the way, which lie on the banks of the Moselle River.

In search of a supermarket in the small town of Riel just up the road from Enkirch.

The steep vineyards of Enkirch in the Moselle Valley.
Although being lovers of wine, we have never really tried (or made aware) German wine and were quite astonished at the number of vineyards and how they are so steeply perched on the neighbouring hills.

After stocking up on supplies at another Lidl (we should be sponsored) and getting a 15 minute lesson on Moselle wines from a big fat truck driver (who would have thought), we made it to the same campground that Mark and Jemima had camped at the year before.

It was a fairly basic setup for a paid campsite, with electricity outlets scattered around the park, a dump station up one end and a hefty walk into town to use the public toilets. This didn’t matter at all considering the amazing scenery and minimal cost of only 7.50 Euro per night!

As we planned to stay there for a couple of nights, we setup camp properly pulling the awning and picnic table out and had a wonderful BBQ dinner.
