Day 49 - July 12th
After walking past the
Hammaro Golf Club the previous day, I could not resist the temptation to get a
round in so woke early, strapped my clubs on my back and rode the 2km up the
road to the course.
As we are on a fairly tight
budget, I could only afford to play the nine but it was well worth it and great
to enjoy another round in a different country.
Immaculate fairways and greens at the Hammaro Golf Club. Oh...and no one on it! |
About to tee off down the 18th. Had to take a photo to prove to my brother Mark that I was spending money and enjoying myself. |
By 10am I was done and headed
back to the van. Claire had entertained herself during the two hours with a 5km
run and finished off the book she was reading.
Although we were in a
stunning location, we still had somewhat of a schedule to keep so decided to
keep moving heading in the direction of Orebro.
Orebro is nestled pretty much
bang in the middle of Goteburg and Stockholm and was once a burgeoning textile
town. Textiles are no longer the core stimulus for the town and it is
predominately driven by university students as they have a couple of large
campuses there.
To get the most out of the
city in the shortest possible time, we pulled the bikes out and took a ride
around town, first stopping at the town castle – Slottet.
The name of the castle itself
is quite funny, as ‘Slot’ is Swedish for castle. Most places we’ve been to will
have the name of the castle in front of it, such as Helsingborg Slot or Rossenborg
Slot, while this one seems to be just called ‘Castle’ and by the sound of it,
it is a female castle.
Outside the Orebro Castle / Slottet. |
Cruising around town in the easiest and quickest way possible. |
A car on a spit. Tax dollars well spent. |
Anyway, we did a quick ride
through the main drag, dropped into a mobile phone store for a prepaid phone card
and then headed back on the road towards the town of Eskiltuna.
We took another
recommendation on a wild camp spot for Eskiltuna as it sounded quite good being
close to the centre of town and perched on an island in the park.
The recommendation was as
described and there were only ourselves and another couple of cars in the lot,
so we got prime position on the waters edge.
After dinner we took a walk
through town and first impressions were not that great, as the shopping
district reminded us a bit of Dandenong with some fairly dingy buildings and
quite a few teenagers loitering about far too late for a school night (and
obviously up to no good).
Fortunately, as we got closer
to the river the buildings improved vastly and the walk along the rivers edge
while storm clouds brewed over head and people drank and ate from the local
café alfresco style was magic.
Which way is up? |
As the clouds grew darker and
darker we decided to turn back to the van to avoid getting drenched and were
thankful for doing so as the thunder and lightning soon erupted just after we
got back into the van.
Getting some amazing storm clouds and a rainbow all in one hit! |
Some more great reflections in Eskiltuna. Average town but made for some good photos. |
