Who ever said Denmark was flat and boring?

Day 40 - 3rd July

The previous evening we had done some reading on a little island off the coast of Funen called Langeland, which was renowned for it’s wheat farming, beaches and cycle paths.

About 5km into a 70km ride.
Langeland Ride Part 1

We hadn’t originally planned to go via Langeland, but over a bridge further up north but given the good weather and the sound of cycling an island full of wheat (for some reason I really love wheat fields), we decided to head over to the island.

It was a quick drive from Svendborg and we were in the capital of Langeland (Rudkobing) in no time, visiting the tourist information center for a detailed map of cycle paths and then picking up some rolls and Danishes for lunch.

We then quickly drove over to Spodsbjerg where we camped up in a carpark behind the marina front and then unpacked the bikes. After lunch we headed south and I would have to say it was one of the most scenic riding we have done while being overseas.

Riding our way through the amazing countryside, complete with windmills!
It's not only the Netherlands that has authentic windmills. Denmark is littered with them.
This tree and the memorial below it is in recongnition of the Russian and French POWs that drifted onto Langeland in WW2.
Hitting the east coast of Langeland.
What can I say. I love Wheat!
Old Danish Farmhouse and Mill.
Langeland Ride Part 2

We were greeted with rolling hills of wheat and barley, historic farmhouses and barns and a number of windmills. We moved inland and back out to the coast on a number of occasions and the island and surrounds never failed to impress in the striking sunshine. After about 5 hours we covered 70km on the bikes and managed to get a coffee and some huge ice-creams in along the way.

The day was topped off with dinner on the marina foreshore watching the sun go down over Denmark. Not a bad day at all.

Alfresco dining.
