Jotunheimen National Park

Day 59 – July 22nd

The day started off with the usual rain but with added icy cold strong winds.  It was a short drive to end of route 13 where the road ended and you we forced to get a ferry over the fjord to continue the journey.  Across the water was Jotunheimen National Park home to Songnefjellet road – the highest mountain road in Northern Europe. My map had outlined this particular road as ‘scenic’ so it was a no brainer.

The original plan was to travel into Jotunheimen National Park and potentially do an overnight hike on one of the many trails in the area.

The view out the window in the morning - the cow is getting relief from wind by sheltering by the building.
One of the local farm steads.
A 'Stave' church (medieval wooden church) we happened to pass along the way.
Admiring the turquoise coloured water of the fjord over lunch.
We followed the windy steep road, admiring the turquoise colour of the water. It was raining and windy and felt a lot more like winter than summer.  The snow was of abundance and the more we continued on the less we felt like an overnight hike.

We took a turn down this narrow road with the intention to do a overnight hike.
We turned around soon after.
Glad we cancelled the hike looking at this!
Luke braving the wind next to a sign instructing people not to disturb historic rock mounds or to build new ones.
Massive snow bank in July!?!

Iceburgs, mist, wind, freezing but so beautiful.

We continued on and after a huge day of driving we camped up at a restplatz in Hannsrove on route 15 just after a town called Lom.

The wild camp spot in Hannsrove.
